Shot Of The Day

Mahalo

Mahalo

Mahalo, a Hawaiian expression of gratitude, has a deeper meaning to the natives. Broken down by an elder, Mahalo translates like this.

Mahalo
[Ma = In] + [hâ = breath] + [alo = presence, front, face] or (May you be) in (Divine) Breath.

The word is perfect for the place. Anywhere you sit, stand or gaze, you feel as if the earth is alive. Volcanoes bubbling. Steam jets rising from gaps in the earth. Snow capped mountains in the midst of lush tropical rain forests and beaches. Sitting on a dried lava field, one feels as if the earth could open at any moment and swallow you. The awesomeness of the universe is palpable here. Like a divine breath has blown beauty from corner to corner. I will never forget Mahalo or the experience of Hawaii. For the next few months, Kat’s Shot of the Day will focus on this amazing place. Enjoy!
