Contradictions

Watching children play through the window on a wall at the Washington Holocaust Museum was a story in contradiction for me. We want unbounded joy for our kids but to be joyful, we must look evil squarely in the eye and recognize it lest it creep slowly back into our lives. Contradiction? I couldn’t find it in myself to be joyful in that place, but I could enjoy hearing the children laughing, watching them play and gazing on them as they enjoyed freedom from the oppression of the Holocaust. Certainly that type of satisfaction fits somewhere within the emotion called joy.
